Plane shelf

Plane shelf

I made this little shelf to store my planes nice and handy on my workbench. It is made from tongued and grooved pine cladding and backed with thin mdf.  It keeps everything handy and I can put them straight back onto the shelves, while working on a project, helps keep the bench clear.

New planes

Meet my two new best friends. These are my latest plane collection additions. The wooden one is an 8.5" David Barron 45 degree smoother. in Bubinga with a 1.5" Hock blade.
The other is a 1999 1-12-060 Stanley low angle block plane. I am really pleased with both of them. I can strongly recommend David Barrons planes, superb build and performance.

Stanley Jack Plane Restoration

This Stanley Jack Plane was in my father-in-laws tool chest, it hasn't been used since the mid 90's, so it was looking pretty sad. The weather is cold and damp here, so it is not much fun going into my workshop to do any woodwork, so I pass the evenings sorting through and restoring my old tools.

This is my latest effort. It was fully stripped down and all the parts were cleaned and polished. The handles were sanded, stained and given 3 coats of shellac. I repainted the body with Humbrol black enamel.

In the January 2013 issue (76) of 'Woodworking Plans and Projects' magazine, Anthony Bailey, the editor, did a very useful 6 page article on wood plane restoration and setting up. I used this article to guide me. (http://www.woodworkersinstitute.com/)

Restored Infill Plane

My (Scottish?) Infill Plane is now restored. I have completed my restoration of this Infill Plane. I am not sure who made it. The cap iron is similar to a Mathieson also the chip breaker is stamped Mathieson, I haven't seen this style of cast body on one of their planes in pictures on the internet though. Perhaps someone has more ideas who made it, (please reply). The Blade is a tapered Ibbotson one. I suppose the purists would say I have over restored it, but as it is for my own collection I am very happy with the way it looks.

Record 778 rebate plane

There is a nice article about the Record 778 rebate plane in this months (Dec/Jan 2013 (No.33) ) issue of British Woodworking. www.britishwoodworking.com I have included a picture of mine for you to compare size and design etc. I would appreciate it if any one finds a link to on-line instruction manuals if they could post a link to it - thanks.

Infill Plane restoration

I am cleaning and repairing an old infill plane. I am not sure who the original maker was but the base is 9 3/4" long and 2 5/8" wide. The blade is a tapered Thomas Ibbotson, 2 1/8" wide, the cap is an Alex Mathieson & son, Glasgow. I am guessing the infill is probably rosewood. I am scrapping the old gunge off it then will seal and polish. it is a nice addition to my little collection.

Wood Plane plans

I found these plans to make this plane, on the web. Some brass work is required, Dad might have some sheet brass or a 300*300 sheet is available on Ebay (about £5). But what is the best way to cut the metal profile? - I am thinking jewelers metal blade scroll/fret saw? or perhaps it is possible to fit metal cutting blades to electric scroll saws - ideas anyone?

David also makes beautiful planes. http://davidbarronfurniture.com

Rebate Plane

This plane was also bought at the Louth (Lincolnshire, UK) antiques barn - It was pretty grubby and blade was rusty but all cleaned up well and it works fine now. Plane is stamped 'CM'

Wooden Smoothing Plane

I bought this plane in an antiques barn in Louth, Lincolnshire a few months ago for £5.
I couldn't see the stamp on the blade because of the rust so gave it a good clean with some Hammerite Rust remover jel from Halfords.
I can now see the blade is stamped ‘J Jowett, Royal Albion, Sheffield’. It is 2 1/8 wide. Jowett were recorded as manufacturers in Albion Street Sheffield in 1911 in Whites guide. So plane will be approx 100 years old.

(Saturday : I just tried this plane in the garage with some scraps of wood. I hadn’t realized how good they are to use. It just glides across the surface with no binding and lovely fine shavings. v.pleased with it.)

Woolworth Plane 1930's

This old wood plane was bought by my Dad in about 1932 - it was from Woolworths - every thing was 6 pence!. It came in 3 pieces - hence 18 pence.

Old Planes

Here are some more old tools awaiting the TLC treatment…

Woden No.7 Jointer Plane

Stanley No.5 Jack plane.

Stanley No.78 Rebate Plane.

Stanley No. 90 Bull Nose Plane

I’ve started to polish up an old Stanley No.90 Bull Nose Plane.
This was in Ron's tool chest - looking sad and in need of some TLC.
