Woodworker and Art Metal Worker

I found these old magazines in my Dad's outhouse last time we visited him. They are called "The Woodworker and Art Metal Worker" There are 6 of them dated 1906. I am thinking of scanning one in to create a .pdf. Would anyone be interested to see it if I do?

I think they were possibly bought by my Great granddad Charles, He was a village blacksmith in Grainthorpe, Lincolnshire in 1906. (See earlier entry in my blog)

Restored Infill Plane

My (Scottish?) Infill Plane is now restored. I have completed my restoration of this Infill Plane. I am not sure who made it. The cap iron is similar to a Mathieson also the chip breaker is stamped Mathieson, I haven't seen this style of cast body on one of their planes in pictures on the internet though. Perhaps someone has more ideas who made it, (please reply). The Blade is a tapered Ibbotson one. I suppose the purists would say I have over restored it, but as it is for my own collection I am very happy with the way it looks.

Record 778 rebate plane

There is a nice article about the Record 778 rebate plane in this months (Dec/Jan 2013 (No.33) ) issue of British Woodworking. www.britishwoodworking.com I have included a picture of mine for you to compare size and design etc. I would appreciate it if any one finds a link to on-line instruction manuals if they could post a link to it - thanks.

Tenon Saw restoration

Tenon Saw restoration

My old 1970’s tenon saw now has a smart new oak handle. I cut and shaped it from a piece of old oak skirting board. Then gave it an oak stain and 3 coats of shellac. The 11 tpi blade was sharpened with small triangular file and it now cuts a treat and is very comfy to use.

Infill Plane restoration

I am cleaning and repairing an old infill plane. I am not sure who the original maker was but the base is 9 3/4" long and 2 5/8" wide. The blade is a tapered Thomas Ibbotson, 2 1/8" wide, the cap is an Alex Mathieson & son, Glasgow. I am guessing the infill is probably rosewood. I am scrapping the old gunge off it then will seal and polish. it is a nice addition to my little collection.

New Tenon saw handle

My new tenon saw handle is coming along nicely. It's made from a piece of old oak skirting board. It will replace a broken plastic handle from a 1970's tenon saw.

Making a Tenon Saw Handle

I have started making a new wooden handle for my old Tenon Saw. It is a 1970’s steel one which had a broken plastic handle. The timber is a piece of 3/4” oak skirting board. I will post again when it is finished.

Paul Sellers Dovetail guides

Dovetail guides.

I have made a couple of dovetail guides today from some off-cut oak. They are 3 1/2” long, 3/4” deep and 1 1/4” wide. They need a bit more finishing, but you get the idea. One angle is 90 deg the other is a ratio of 1/7 (approx 8 deg) they are made to a design by Paul Sellers. Here is his YouTube link showing how they are made and used. http://youtu.be/0dPb_5KFEYk

Old Chisels

The old chisels I brought home from Dad's house have cleaned up nicely.
They are labeled:-
"WARD Cast Steel", "Robt Sorby - Cast steel", "W K & C Peace - Sheffield" (I think) , "Swearby", and "Sakescar"? (I think).

Occasional table restoration

Occasional table, top restoration.

I have joined the 4 sections of the top together again and sanded the surface flat to remove most of the damage. I then scraped and smoothed it before applying a coat of Ronseal Rosewood stain. I am pleased with the result it is quite even and a good match with the original. It should come up well with a few coats of shellac polish.

Dove Tail practice Mk II

Dove Tail practice mk II.

Had a fun afternoon scraping and staining the side table I am restoring. Then had another go at producing a dovetail. I used some old maple flooring boards this time - pretty hard wood. I find it pretty tricky to mark up the 2nd piece from the 1st piece and then cutting it accurately. two of the pins got a bit too much pared off them. Better than the 1st one though, so I have improved.
