Sketch up for designing

After saying I wanted to get away from using a computer so much - I've slipped back into old habits (mainly due to it being freezing in the workshop), by having a go a designing a small cabinet along the lines of Kath Fernie's Victory cabinet. I have guessed at the size but tried to get the proportions right. This is a screen shot from Sketch-up. It's a bit of a quirky program to use, but I guess as I use it more I will get familiar with the the commands. If you get the scale right to start with then the measuring rule and dimension tools are great for working out a cutting list. I find re-sizing objects a bit tricky though - more study required in that area. This is a link to my Sketchup file (so far) if you want to have a play with it :- http://dl.dropbox.com/u/69938829/cupboard4.skp

Archibald Knox chest.

This is a picture off the Archibald Knox Wiki site. Jamie posted that the HMS Victory cabinet of Kath Fernie's had similar style and feel. I tend to agree.

M&S cabinet - interesting design.

I saw this cabinet at Marks and Spencer today - I like the way it transforms from a tidy cabinet into a dressing table - a nice design application.

Mini Bow Saw

I have finished my Mini-Bow-Saw. I made it from maple and scaled it to take a 6.5" coping saw blade. it works well. the tension bar and flexible tenons allow the blade to be brought to a nice tension. Not sure how much use it will get but it was good fun making it!

HMS Victory Celebration

I love the design of this commemorative cabinet made by UK furniture maker and designer Katharine Fernie. It was created from oak and copper removed from HMS Victory as part of a recent refurbishment. It forms part of the “1805 Collection” - a collection of limited edition commemorative works by leading craftspeople. http://www.furniture-workshop.co.uk

Another of Katharines cupboards, similar in design to the HMS Victory one.

Mini Bow-Saw project

Mini bow-saw
This is my miniature bow-saw project - The top photo shows an old bow saw I bought on eBay. Large blades are quite tricky to obtain and expensive to ship over from Gramercy in the States. So I decided it would be fun to make a mini version that would take standard 170mm coping saw blades. This is where I have got up to. I have some brass rod I will cut to hold the blade pins then I can epoxy glue the rod into the handles. The wood is salvaged Canadian maple flooring rescued from a skip, just wish I had stocked up with it while it was there instead of letting it go to landfill doh!

Home made spindle sander

I cut out some parts for my miniature Bow-Saw project and realized it was tricky to sand the curves to a smooth finish. So I mounted my drill in a old stand and attached a drum sanding bit in the chuck. To create a surface to work from, I drilled a hole a piece of pine just larger that the sanding drum and lowered the drum into it just below the surface. The pine is fixed to the base with double sided sticky tape. I was able to achieve nice smooth curves on the maple pieces.
